– Keep your jewellery dry – do not expose to water (Bath, shower, sea, pool, spa etc.)
– Avoid sudden temperature changes, as this could ‘shock’ your gemstones causing cracks. Prolonged periods or cold or heat can damage gemstones. Topaz is very sensitive, and amber can melt in extreme heat.
– Store pieces separately as softer gemstones can be damaged when in contact with harder stones. Wrap in soft cloth for protection.
– Silver will oxidise if exposed to the air, so sealed bags will stop any tarnishing, but keep in mind what gemstones have been set. All organic gems, such as amber, pearls and coral, need to breathe.
– Pearls love satin-lined boxes. The porous stones, like turquoise and opals, also need exposure to fresh air and humidity. They will deteriorate if stored in dark, dry places. Wrapping the “breathing” gems in a soft cloth is recommended.
– Avoid using harsh jewellery cleaners.
– Apply lotions or perfume and allow to dry before putting your jewellery on.
– Remember this basic rule: Jewellery should be the last thing you put on, and the first thing you take off.
